GHIC & EHIC · NHS rules

The GHIC is free. It isn't insurance.

A UK GHIC gets you state healthcare in Europe and a few other places on the same terms as locals. It won't fly you home, pay for a private clinic or cover a ski rescue. Check your destination.

Will it work there?

The GHIC covers medically necessary state treatment, the kind that can't reasonably wait until you're home, in the EU and in Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein (where reciprocal arrangements began on 1 January 2024). Switzerland has extra conditions, and a handful of other places have their own agreements (NHS).

GHIC works hereSpain

Medically necessary state healthcare on the same terms as a local resident. That can still mean paying what a local would pay.

Never covered by GHIC
Private treatment · medical repatriation to the UK · mountain or ski rescue · changes to your travel and accommodation. You need travel insurance for these.

Carry the card, and the policy

Your policy wording may ask you to use your GHIC in Europe where you can, and some policies reduce the excess if you do: check yours. Take the card, your policy number and the 24-hour emergency line with you.

Outside the list, there's no state safety net: the FCDO's example of a hospital stay in the USA is over £150,000. Check what your trip needs →

Questions

Straight answers

What is a GHIC card?
The UK Global Health Insurance Card gets you medically necessary state healthcare in the EEA and some other countries "on the same basis as a resident of that country". That may be free, or you may pay what a local would (NHS).
How much does a GHIC cost?
Nothing. Apply free through the official NHS service; cards last up to five years. Unofficial sites may charge to do the same thing.
Is my old EHIC still valid?
Yes, until the expiry date on the card. After that you'll need a GHIC, unless you qualify for a new UK EHIC under the Withdrawal Agreement (NHSBSA).
Does the GHIC work in Switzerland?
Only for some people: British, Swiss or EU nationals, refugees, stateless people, and family members of these (NHS).
Do I still need travel insurance with a GHIC?
Yes. The FCDO: "EHIC and GHIC are not alternatives to travel insurance as they do not cover any private medical healthcare costs, repatriation or additional costs such as mountain rescue in ski resorts."
